The goal of this class is to provide students with a basic knowledge of work, occupation, and Arbeit, which are important concepts and practices in the history of educational thought. The goal is also to enable students to apply that knowledge to philosophical considerations.
After an overview of Dewey's theory of “occupation” and Kerschensteiner's theory of “Arbeit”, participants will read “Labor (Arbeit) Education” (Tamagawa Gakuen Press, 1930) written by Japanese pedagogue, Shigenao Konishi (1875-1948), and discuss his theory of labor education.

教育思想史の概論に関する知識を必要とする。新教育運動についての基礎的知識を必要とする。
第一回の授業で資料（テキスト）を送付するため、パソコンを持参することが望ましい。
本授業は、教育思想史における重要概念であり、実践である仕事・作業・労作について基礎的な知識を身につけることを目標とする。また、それらの知識を哲学的考察に応用できるようになることを目標とする。

デューイの「仕事」論やケルシェンシュタイナーの「労作」論について概説した後、日本の教育学者である小西重直（1875-1948）の『労作教育』（玉川学園出版部、1930年）を受講者で読解し、彼の労作教育論について議論する。
