The goal of the class is to understand the variety of literary works in the Taisho-Showa Transitional Period, and to understand the development and background of Showa era literature. Through this process, we aim to improve basic skills for literary studies.
Around 1927, while Ryunosuke Akutagawa suddenly died in the midst of his “plot” debate with Junichiro Tanizaki, the yen-book boom progressed and proletarian literature became increasingly organized. This period highlighted the impression of structural changes within the literary world, and this sense of change was shared by contemporaries.
In addition to examination of the content of specific works presented in the year, the class will engage in contemporary evaluation, examination of media background, etc., and, by taking the relationships among these into consideration, will re-examine the meaning of literary trends and social aspects of literary works of this period. Reports by participants will be in two stages: reports on specific works, and what sort of works to use as materials. Through that process, participants will improve their research skills.

大正-昭和過渡期の文学作品の多様性を知り、昭和期文学の展開と背景を理解することを目標とする。またそのプロセスを通して、文学研究のための基本的スキルの向上を目指す。
The goal of the class is to understand the variety of literary works in the Taisho-Showa Transitional Period, and to understand the development and background of Showa era literature. Through this process, we aim to improve basic skills for literary studies.
昭和2年前後は、谷崎潤一郎を相手にした「小説の筋」論争を行っていた芥川龍之介の突然の死の一方で、円本ブームの進行、プロレタリア文学の組織化の進展など。文学の世界の構造的な変化の印象が前景化された時期であり、そのような変化の感覚は同時代的にも共有されていた。
この授業では、この年とその前後に発表された具体的な作品に即して、その内容の検討に加え、同時代的な評価、メディア的背景などを検討し、それらの関係性を視野に入れることによって、この時期の文学作品の社会的位相や文学的傾向の意味を再検討する。なお、参加者による報告は、どのような作品・文学的動向を素材とするかと、具体的な課題・作品をめぐる報告との二段階とし、その過程で研究スキルの向上を図る。
