(2) Gain an understanding of how the concept of “Japan” came to be.
(3) Acquire techniques for deciphering difficult texts.
We will examine Naoki Sakai's Voices of the Past: The Status of Language in Eighteenth-Century Japanese Discourse, which reconstructs the intellectual history of the Edo period using the tools of French theory. The central themes include Neo-Confucianism, Itō Jinsai, Edo popular literature, classical philology (Ogyu Sorai), and Kokugaku (Kamo no Mabuchi and Motoori Norinaga). The academic fields covered are diverse, spanning philosophy, intellectual history, literature, linguistics, and political science. We will interpret the book's overall logical structure while grasping the substance of each individual theme and subject.

江戸時代思想史を現代フランス思想の道具立てを用いて再構成した、酒井直樹『過去の声―18世紀日本の言説における言語の地位』を読解していく。そこで主題となるのは朱子学・伊藤仁斎・江戸の俗文学・古文辞学（荻生徂徠）・国学（賀茂真淵・本居宣長）などであり、対象となる学問分野は哲学・思想史・文学・言語学・政治学など多岐にわたる。個別の主題や対象の内実を把握しながら、全体として本書がどのような論理構成になっているのかを読解していく。
