The purpose of this course is to enable students, through close reading of texts, to examine the foundational methods of Japanese language research, their evolution over time, and the descriptions that have been lost to the passage of time, thereby fostering a renewed consideration of the current state of research.
This course will involve close reading of Masao Tanabe's History of Japanese Linguistics (Sakufusha Publishing, 1959). While several books bear the title History of Japanese Linguistics, we will explore the distinctive features of this volume by comparing it with relatively recent research findings. The focus will be on the treatment of dictionaries and early modern Kokugaku studies, though specific sections to examine in detail will be selected as appropriate based on students' interests.

そもそもマニアックな本なので、必ずしも日本語学を専攻していなくても問題ありません。ただ、学史を学ぶことの意義については考えておいてください。

文献精読を通じて、日本語研究の手法の基礎やその移り変わり、そして時代の流れの中で失われてきた記述などに目を向け、あらためて現在の研究の在り方に思いを致せるようになること。

田辺正男『国語学史』（桜楓社出版、1959年）を精読します。『国語学史』を冠する書籍や論考は色々ありますが、比較的新しい研究成果との比較を通じて、本書に見られる特徴的な記述を探ります。辞書や近世国学の扱いが中心になりますが、受講者の興味関心によって細かく扱う箇所は適宜選んでいきます。
