【Course Objectives】

Through literary works, students will be able to examine how travel was accepted at a time when it was becoming an established way of spending leisure time.

【Course Contents】

Students will read 19th century French travel literature. This year, the focus will be on the Romantic writer Chateaubriand (1768-1848), whose Voyage au Mont-Blanc was published in 1806. The writer's unique technique of describing spectacular mountain landscapes will be analyzed through the work from a period when artists and writers were discovering the art of describing landscapes. We will also read excerpts from La Montagne by Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and compare them to examine the specificity of Chateaubriand's text.
