We will read Montesquieu's Persian Letters, one of the greatest masterpieces of French epistolary novels, while touching upon perspectives such as Orientalism, exoticism, and sexuality.
We will carefully read Montesquieu's Persian Letters. Keeping in mind the numerous literary works that depict French society as a spectacle through the lens of the "Other," we will engage in a close reading of Montesquieu's masterpiece. We will focus on themes such as politics and "sex," society and "customs," law and "justice," religion and rituals. The instructor will also provide an explanation of its relationship with The Spirit of the Laws and its influence on later periods.

フランス書簡体小説の最高傑作のひとつ、モンテスキューの『ペルシア人の手紙』を、オリエンタリズム、エグゾティスム、セクシュアリティといった視点に触れつつ、読んでいきます。
We will read Montesquieu's Persian Letters, one of the greatest masterpieces of French epistolary novels, while touching upon perspectives such as Orientalism, exoticism, and sexuality.
モンテスキューの『ペルシア人の手紙』を精読します。「他者」の視線を借りて、フランス社会をスペクタクルとして描き出した無数の啓蒙の文学作品を念頭に（この点については概説していきます）、モンテスキューの傑作を熟読します。政治と「性」、社会と「習俗」、法律と「法」、宗教と儀礼…。さまざまな観点からこの作品を考察しましょう。（あまりにも有名な）『法の精神』との関係、のちの時代への影響といった点についても解説します。
また、テクスト分析の方法を学びます。
