We will read Mary Douglas's theory on dirt to gain a renewed perspective on the formation of cultural orders or social norms.
We will read Mary Douglas's Purity and Danger. In this work, Douglas discusses how dirt/pollution is defined and what functions it serves within different societies or religions. We will examine Douglas's arguments, focusing particularly on the question of whether the dirt is a socially constructed concept or a reality grounded in nature. Our concern relates to disciplines such as sociology, cultural anthropology, and religious studies (history of religions and comparative religion), closely linked to themes such as community theories, body theories, and ritual theories.
Each class will be discussed based on the presenter's presentation.

メアリ・ダグラス『汚穢と禁忌』の議論を検討し、文化的秩序の観念、社会的行為規範の形成に関する新しい視点を獲得する。
We will read Mary Douglas's theory on dirt to gain a renewed perspective on the formation of cultural orders or social norms.
メアリ・ダグラスの『汚穢と禁忌』を講読します。この著作の中で、ダグラスは、それぞれの社会あるいは宗教において「汚れ」とされるものがどのようにして定義され、またどのような機能をもたされているのかを論じました。本講義ではとくに、汚れとは社会的に構築されたものであるのか、または自然のうちに根拠をもつリアリティであるのかという観点を軸に、ダグラスの議論を検討します。本講義の内容は、社会学、文化人類学、宗教学（宗教史学・比較宗教学）といった分野に対応し、とりわけ共同体論、身体論、儀礼論といった主題と密接に関わります。
毎回の授業では、講読箇所と発表者を決め、その発表に基づき議論を行います。
