"Nature" is not only a polysemantic concept, but in recent yeas has normative force. In this course, we will intensively read Julia Adeney Thomas’s "Reconfiguring Modernity: Concepts of Nature in Japanese Political Ideology" in order to examine the meaning of the nature in modern Japanese intellectual context.
Each class, the instructor will write a summary (reading comprehension of the textbook and the reference literature). Following this, discussions will be held. Each student will be expected to actively participate. Students will need to procure a copy of “Reconfiguring Modernity: Concepts of Nature in Japanese Political Ideology” in advance.

「自然」は多義的な概念であるばかりではなく、近年では規範的な力も持つようになった。この演習では、ジュリア・アデニー・トーマスの『近代の再構築』を精読して、近代日本の知的世界における「自然」の意味を検証する。

担当者はレジュメ作成（テクストの読解＋引用文献の読解）。その後でディスカッション。各自の積極的な参加を期待する。『近代の再構築』を事前に入手しておくこと。
