In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse (1927).
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is one of the most important novelists and critics in twentieth-century England. In this course we are closely reading her major novel To the Lighthouse (1927). Employing the so-called 'stream of consciousness' technique, this novel depicts characters' psychology in detail. The second part 'Time Passes' is a bold experiment in that it describes how an almost empty house is invaded by nature for ten years. We will consider many important questions such as the empire, class, gender, nature and human existence that this novel addresses. We will also read some essays on this novel.

In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse (1927).
20世紀イギリスを代表する小説家、批評家Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)の代表作To the Lighthouse (1927)は来年で刊行100周年になります。いわゆる「意識の流れ」という手法を駆使して、一家族を中心とした人物たちの心理を詳細に描いたこのモダニズム作品は、第二部「時は過ぎゆく」でほぼ無人の状態の家の１０年間を描くという大胆な実験を試みてもいます。帝国、階級、ジェンダー、自然と人間の存在などの重要な問題を考察しつつ、細部にまでこだわりながら精読し、かつこの作品に関する評論も読んでいきます。
