In this course, we will closely read Samuel Beckett's major plays.
Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) is the most important figure in the twentieth-century English and French literature. His extraordinary work, which revolutionized both the novel and the drama, explores the fundamental questions regarding language, story-telling and life itself, more sharply and deeply than any other author's work. In this course, we are reading his major plays such as Waiting for Godot(1953), Endgame(1957), and Happy Days(1961). We will try as much as possible to appreciate them visually too. We will also pay attention to his later forays into other media such as radio television and film. We will mainly consider what is really actually in his plays which are often called the extreme point of modern drama.

In this course, we will closely read Samuel Beckett's major plays.
20世紀イギリス・フランス文学を代表する小説家、劇作家Samuel Beckett(1906-1989)は小説と演劇の両ジャンルで革命を起こしました。彼の破格な作品は、言語とは何か、語ることとは何か、ひいては生きるとは何かについてどんな作家よりも鋭く、また深く追究しています。この授業ではWaiting for Godot(1953)、Endgame(1957), Happy Days(1961)などの主要な戯曲を読みます。また視覚的にもできる限り鑑賞します。ベケットは徐々にラジオ、テレビ、映画などの別のジャンルにも手を広げたので、そのような展開にも留意します。現代演劇の極北と言われる彼の戯曲の何がアクチュアルなのかをじっくりと考えることを主眼とします。同時に彼が固執した二人組という形象についても考察していきます。
