In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs Dalloway (1925).
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is one of the most important novelists and critics in twentieth-century England. In this course we are closely reading her major novel Mrs Dalloway (1925), which was published exactly one hundred years ago. Employing the so-called 'stream of consciousness' technique, this novel depicts one day of an upper-middle class woman. As well as pioneering modernism in the novel, it addresses many questions such as the empire, class, gender, and human existence itself. We will pay attention to the details of the novel and discuss them. We will also read some essays on this novel.

In this course, we will closely read Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs Dalloway (1925).
20世紀イギリスを代表する小説家、批評家Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)の代表作Mrs Dalloway (1925)は今年で刊行100周年になります。いわゆる「意識の流れ」という手法を駆使して、小説に新境地を開いたこのモダニズム作品は、ある上流中産階級の女性の一日を描いていますが、帝国、階級、ジェンダー、人間の存在など数多くの問題を内包しています。この授業では、この作品の細部にまでこだわりながら精読し、かつこの作品に関する評論も読んでいきます。
