We will explore 20th-century philosophy of language through the history of the "performative." This concept suggests that language is more than just a tool for describing reality; it is an act that creates something new. Through this examination, students will aim to understand the "power" of words, including their ability to influence society and cause injury to others.
We will read texts on the philosophy of language, starting with J.L. Austin’s How to Do Things with Words, the work that introduced the concept of the performative. We will primarily refer to the Japanese translations.

20世紀の言語哲学について、「パフォーマティブ」という概念の系譜を辿ることで考察する。パフォーマティブとは、言語がなにかすでに存在するものを記述・報告するだけでなく、それ自体で新たなものを作り出す行為であることを示す概念である。この概念を考察することを通して言葉がもっている社会を動かしたり人を傷つけたりする「力」についての理解を深めることを目標とする。
