The purpose of this lecture is to reconsidering the thriller works of the 19th-century female writer Louisa May Alcott, commonly known as “Blood and Thunder” Tales, and to examine the relationship between 19th-century popular entertainment and female authors.
In this lecture, we will explore another facet of Louisa May Alcott, who gained popularity for her works generally targeted towards a younger audience and was posthumously referred to as the “Children's Friend” in her biography. Allegedly due to economic reasons, she occasionally wrote thriller stories under pseudonyms, but within these works, Alcott's talent shines through, and it is possible for us to sense her enjoyment that goes beyond mere financial motivations. This lecture aims to examine Alcott's thriller works, considering the publishing conditions of popular novels in the 19th century and exploring the position of female writers.
The class will focus on “Pauline's Passion and Punishment,” “A Whisper in the Dark,” and “Behind a Mask,” putting these works along with their historical context. The format of the class primarily involves presentations, followed by a class discussion.

本講義では、19世紀の女性作家Louisa May Alcottのスリラー作品、いわゆる“Blood and Thunder” Talesを再考し、19世紀の大衆娯楽と女性作家の関係を考察することを目的とする。

本講義では、一般的には若年層向けの作品を執筆したことで人気を博し、死後に出版された伝記でも「子供たちの友」と称されたLouisa May Alcottのもうひとつの側面である、スリラー作家としての顔を見ていく。経済的な理由から、時に別名義を用いながら執筆されたとする作品群であるが、中にはAlcottの筆が冴え、単に金銭的理由から書いたとは思えないような楽しさが伝わってくるように思われる作品もある。本講義では、現在Alcottが執筆したことが判明しているスリラー作品を読みつつ、19世紀における大衆小説の出版状況や、女性作家の位置を探るものである。
授業では“Pauline's Passion and Punishment,” “A Whisper in the Dark,” “Behind a Mask”を取り上げ、その成立背景とともに、作品を読解する。授業は基本的に発表形式で行われ、その後クラス全体でディスカッションを行う。
