In this seminar, we will closely read classics in environmental philosophy and ethics to examine the relationship between nature and humanity, as well as humanity's place and responsibilities within nature. We will cultivate the ability to philosophically envision sustainable societies and ways of life.
Among the classical philosophers and thinkers in environmental philosophy and ethics, we can cite Rachel Carson of ”Silent Spring”, Aldo Leopold of land ethics, and Arne Næss, the proponent of deep ecology. This year, we will carefully read Arne Næss's works, gain an understanding of his environmental philosophy and its influence on environmental ethics, then discuss the nature of sustainable societies and lifestyles.
As text, we will cover several of the most important chapters from The Ecology of Wisdom.

この演習では、環境哲学・環境倫理の古典を精読して、自然と人間との関係、自然における人間の地位と責任について考察し、持続可能な社会のあり方と生活形態を哲学的に構想する力を養います。

環境哲学・環境倫理の古典的な哲学者・思想家としては、『沈黙の春』のレイチェル・カーソン、土地倫理のアルド・レオポルド、そしてディープ・エコロジーの提唱者、アルネ・ネスをあげることができますが、今年は、アルネ・ネスの著作を精読して、彼の環境哲学と環境倫理におけるその影響について理解した上で、持続可能な社会のあり方と生活形態について議論していきます。
テキストとして、『知恵のエコロジー（The Ecology of Wisdom）』のなかの最も重要ないくつかの章を取り上げます。
