【Course Objectives】

Consider the regional characteristics from the perspective of the "Hanseatic History". Understand the role of institutions and networks for the economic development.

【Course Contents】

We consider the regional and historical characteristics of European economy and the process of its development through the history of the German Hanse. A special attention is put on the role of the institutions and networks of the Hanse.
We argue the historical development, decline, or structural change of the Hanse as well as Hanseatic cities and merchants, reading and discussing the relevant literature written in Japanese and English.
Students must complete assignments given in the class (create simple note or summary on these subjects or free research presentation). Professor will give assignment in every class.
