【Course Objectives】

Students will understand globalization through political economics perspective.

【Course Contents】

After entering 21st century, emerging countries, particularly BRICS, have changed drastically global economic map, which had been dominated by 19th and 20th century imperialism countries and developed industrial countries. Particularly, the rise of China has challenged reigning country US more and more. In many developed nations, globaphobia is trying to outdo emerging globalism, evidenced by Brexit and Trump administration in US. This seems to be a sign of arriving era with higher uncertainty and instability.
In this class, students will examine development and transition of world economy from around WWII until today while focusing on the transition from international economic relationship to global economy and changes in its structure to understand current international economy. Students will also try to understand the international economy from political policy perspective by finding out the relationship between actual economic and the conceptual economic within the transition process. Furthermore, the class will look into specific political economic phenomena and policy development sequentially to discuss their political economic meanings, their impacts and significances in actual economy worldwide. Therefore, this class tilts towards “theories” that is to be used for interpretation based on the fact, instead of “knowledge” that focus on theories. In other words, the approaches focus on qualitative instead of quantitative analysis.
In this class, specific international economic phenomena and policy development will be picked up sequentially, while considering their mutual relationships and political economic meanings as well as their impacts and significances in actual economy worldwide. Students will be able to grasp current global economic states by integrating individual information available in large volume daily.
