This course is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the philosophical, social and industrial context within which corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Japan has developed, the constructs characterizing its conceptualization, and the features which distinguish its previous and current applications.
The course is divided into four sections: one preliminary and three thematic units. The preliminary unit is an introduction to the concept of CSR in general.
Unit one concentrates upon a survey of traditional thought on business and business ethics in Japan.
Unit two is a review of the forces which shaped these concepts within the context of Japan’s industrialization and modernization.
Unit three is a survey of how CSR has recently been conceptualized and applied in practice.
Each unit is based upon a set of readings on a specific topic or issue which will form the subject material for presentations and class discussion concerning each theme.
