Through a reading of the basic literature of contemporary sociology of religion, the course will examine the present state of religion and society.
In pioneering sociology, religion represented a vanishing pre-modern order and was therefore central to sociological concerns. In this class, as a foundational course, we will examine how religion in contemporary society is viewed sociologically through readings and discussions. There will also be times to view video materials.

草創期の社会学では、宗教とは、消えゆく前近代の秩序を代表するものであり、それゆえに社会学の関心の中心にあった。このクラスでは、基礎科目として、現代社会における宗教を社会学的にどうとらえるのかということを、輪読やディスカッションによって検討する。映像資料を見る回も設ける。
