【Course Objectives】

The course objectives are to enable students to:

Summarize literature contents appropriately and develop the ability to comment on the contents.

Think critically about political issues, analyze policies based on evidence, and consider ways to build a more just and sustainable society.

【Course Contents】

Today's society faces many challenges, including climate change, inequality, health, and technology. In this class, students will learn to approach these challenges with ideas such as effective altruism and long-termism.

Effective altruism is a philosophy that aims to maximize the well-being of as many people as possible. It provides a criterion for determining whose well-being should be prioritized in the face of limited resources. Long-termism advocates the importance of going beyond short-sighted interests and taking into account the well-being of future generations.

The class will trace the origins and evolution of these ideas and learn about their theoretical framework. We will then discuss how to apply these principles to specific policy issues such as climate change and AI development.
