【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

ジャーナリズムには近代初頭の誕生から長い時間をかけて積み上げてきた理念、規範、スタイル（文体）がある。日々の報道、記事はそうした諸規範を踏まえて生産されている。したがって、新聞記事などを材料に内容分析、ディスコース分析、フレーム分析などを行う際には、そうした積み上げてきた諸理念・規範を十分に理解し、蓄積をつくることが必要になる。この授業はそうした理解、蓄積を深めることを目標とする。

Journalism has a long history of ideas, norms, and styles (writing style) that have been built up since its birth in the early modern Europe. Daily reports and articles are produced based on these ideas and norms. Therefore, when conducting content analysis, discourse analysis, frame analysis, etc. using newspaper articles as material, it is necessary to fully understand and accumulate knowledge of these ideas and norms. This course is to deepen understanding and knowledge in this field.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

まず、歴史上初のジャーナリズム理念である言論・プレスの自由について概説。ついで、19世紀前半から半ばにかけてアメリカで登場したペニープレスと近代的通信社が打ち出した中立、それから19世紀末のやはりアメリカで革新主義の潮流に乗るかたちで提唱されたプレスの独立、公共奉仕などの理念、規範を扱う。さらに、未曽有のプロパガンダ戦だった第一次世界大戦を経て、1930年代アメリカで生まれた客観報道という考え方を取り上げる。その後、実際の新聞やオンラインメディアの記事で上記のような諸理念・規範がどのように採用されているかを検討する。

First, the course will provide an overview of freedom of speech and the press, the first journalistic idea in history. It will then discuss the neutrality advocated by the penny press and modern news agencies that emerged in the United States in the early to mid-19th century, as well as the ideas and norms of independence of the press and public service that were advocated in the United States at the end of the 19th century in line with progressivism. It will also look at the idea of objectivity, which emerged in the United States in the 1930s after the unprecedented propaganda campaign of World War I. It will then examine how these ideas and norms have been adopted in today’s newspaper and online media articles.
