What is alternative media? Through the reading of English literature, this course aims to grasp its definition and related concepts, deepening the understanding of the significance, possibilities, and limitations of alternative media practices.
To understand the meaning of alternative media, this course first examines it from three perspectives: its related concepts; the social positioning of its actors—including citizens, immigrants, diasporas, and indigenous peoples; and their relationship with mainstream society. Through this analysis, we aim to identify the contemporary significance of alternative media.
Furthermore, utilizing normative media concepts and theories, we will explore the possibilities and limitations of media operated by citizens and minorities. We will also grasp global trends by focusing on case study readings from the Nordic region, the United States, Asia, and Africa.

What is alternative media? Through the reading of English literature, this course aims to grasp its definition and related concepts, deepening the understanding of the significance, possibilities, and limitations of alternative media practices.
