The aim of the class is to understand a variety of methodologies in the sociological analysis of discourse, to understand the assumptions and difficulties in each method, and to be able to perform simple quantitative text analysis.
It has been produced a lot of sociological studies on discourses, which are based on a variety of theories and methodologies including social constructionism, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and text-mining using natural linguistic processing. Each study can be reviewed not only its originality but also the validity of analytical procedure and the ontological/epistemological assumption about the relationship between discourse and society.
The aim of the class is to gain a basic understanding of what sorts of sociological methodologies of analysis of discourse there are and what presumption and limit each one has. Participants are supposed to read designated texts, to take part in discussions on them actively, and to engage in a trial work.
In addition to the topics mentioned above, we would like to address the challenges posed by the recent decline in research conditions for text mining using newspaper articles, as a result of the ban policies implemented by various newspaper companies. We will also propose effective countermeasures to tackle this issue.
Participants are not required an experience of studying discourses.

・言説を社会学的に分析する上で、いかなる方法的立場があるか理解する

The aim of the class is to understand a variety of methodologies in the sociological analysis of discourse, to understand the assumptions and difficulties in each method, and to be able to perform simple quantitative text analysis.
社会学において言説や文字データを用いた研究は多いが、それが依拠する方法論／理論は、構築主義やフーコー的言説分析から、概念分析、自然言語処理を用いたテキストマイニングに至るまで、多岐にわたっている。その中で、知見の新規性はもちろん、分析の手続きの妥当性や、言説／社会の関係に関する認識論的な前提が厳しく問われることもある。
本授業では、言説を対象とする研究にはどのような方法的立場があり、それぞれいかなる前提と課題を有しているのか、基本的な視座を習得することをめざす。基礎的な文献を講読した上で議論し、部分的にはKHコーダー等を用いたワークも活用しながら理解を深めていきたい。
以上に加えて本年度は、言説を分析する研究環境の悪化にどう対応するか、ということも論点の一つとしたい。具体的には新聞記事を用いたテキストマイニングが、近年各新聞社によって禁止されるようになり、実施が難しくなりつつある。これに対する有効な対応策についてもいくつか提示する。
なお受講者は言説研究の経験者である必要はない。むしろ、初めて言説を用いて修士論文、投稿論文、その他論文等を書く人も含め、本方法論に関する基本的な議論の特徴を理解できるようになることが主な目的である。
