This course examines the policies and strategic visions formulated by Imperial Japan—focusing on the interplay between the military, diplomatic institutions, and private sectors—toward China during the late Qing and early Republican periods. In addition to critically reviewing existing scholarship, students will conduct in-depth analyses by examining primary sources authored by contemporary actors, to the extent that time permits. The goal is to re-evaluate the complex dynamics of Sino-Japanese relations through a rigorous historical lens.
In this course, we will examine several seminal works concerning Imperial Japan’s policy toward China, with each text being discussed over one or more sessions.
Student Presentations: Designated presenters are required to summarize the content of the assigned text, provide a critical review, and analyze its significance within the broader context of political and economic history. Presenters must prepare a structured handout (résumé) and a printed compilation of the comments submitted by their peers for distribution in class.

主に明治大正期の日本(特に軍部や外交機関や民間人、財界)が、清末民初と言われる時期の中国に対してどのような政策を取ろうとしていたか、先行業績を検討すると共に、時間の許す範囲で当事者の史料を読んで具体的に分析する。このテーマについての学界の研究状況を俯瞰すると共に、参加者がそれぞれの研究を進めていく際の手続や分析枠組を考える参考にすることが、この授業の目標である。

この授業では、予め指定された近代日本の対中政策に関する主要な先行業績を数冊取上げ、一回または数回に分けて議論する。報告者がその内容を要約すると共に批評し、政治史・経済史・外交史における位置付けを検討する。報告者以外の参加者は授業の前日までにそのテキストを読み、Canvas LMSの「ディスカッション」にコメントを二点以上書き込み、当日の議論の準備とする。報告者は当日の授業までに、レジメと、他の参加者からのコメントを印刷した配布物を用意し、当日の報告に臨む。
