This course examines the rise of commercial society in 18th-century Europe and the development of political thought surrounding it, focusing primarily on English and French texts.
The conception of commercial society in the age of Enlightenment gave rise to various debates—on luxury, population, militias, and the ancient versus the modern—and is said to have profoundly transformed the language of traditional political thought. Here, the intellectual domains now distinct as “politics” and “economics” were intermingled or fluctuating without clear boundaries. We will explore this interdisciplinary dynamism during the age of Enlightenment by examining some benchmark texts of the century and discussing them with participants.

18世紀ヨーロッパにおける商業社会の勃興とこれをめぐる政治思想の展開について、とくに英仏圏のテクストを中心に講読する。
This course examines the rise of commercial society in 18th-century Europe and the development of political thought surrounding it, focusing primarily on English and French texts.
啓蒙の世紀における商業社会の認識は、奢侈論争や人口論争、民兵論争や古代・近代論争といった様々な論点を生み出し、伝統的な政治思想の言語に大きな変化をもたらしたと言われている。そこでは、今日「政治学」と「経済学」という形で分けられている学問領域が混じり合い、明確な境界線を確定できないまま揺れ動いていた。こうした啓蒙の世紀における知のダイナミズムについて、当時の代表的なテクストを取り上げながら受講者とともに議論したい。
