Notes

【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to develop students’ ability to analyze contemporary international political phenomena by using expanded conceptions of power in International Relations theory. Rather than treating power as a material capability possessed by states, the course emphasizes a relational perspective that understands power as constituted through relationships, meanings, emotions, and legitimacy among actors. Through close readings of key theoretical texts and applied case analyses, students will learn to reconstruct power concepts as analytical tools and apply them to independent research.

【Course Contents】

This course examines the concept of power in International Relations by linking theoretical inquiry with applied analysis. It begins with classical realism through the works of Hans J. Morgenthau to establish foundational understandings of power. It then explores the relational and constitutive turn in power analysis through Power in World Politics edited by Berenskoetter and Williams. Finally, the course engages with The Power of Emotions in World Politics by Koschut to analyze how emotions shape political action, norms, and international order. Throughout the course, students are encouraged not only to understand these theories but also to use expanded conceptions of power as analytical tools for examining concrete international political events.
