本授業では統計的知識があることを前提に進める。
具体的には、確率論、確率分布、統計的検定、回帰分析の基礎的理解があり、統計検定2級程度の知識を前提に授業を進めるので受講の際には注意すること。
統計調査を中心としつつ、社会調査全般にわたって意義と諸類型に関する基本的事項を解説する。

社会調査の種類、調査票の作成、無作為抽出、無作為割当、データの分析、報告書の執筆といった社会調査の方法やそれを用いたデータ分析についての知識を取得することを目的とする。統計ソフトを用いたデータ分析方法などのスキルの取得も目指す。
