Students will be able to understand the characteristics of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament based on its historical contexts, and develop their own view by investigating topics of interest.
The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is often said to be a book telling about the history of ancient Israel. However, what the Bible tells us is somewhat different from the historical reality. The Israelite people depicted in the Bible should be understood as a literary construct created by the biblical authors based on the experiences of the residents of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and their ancestors as well as descendants. In this course, Israel in the biblical tradition (the "biblical" Israel) is distinguished from the Israelite and Judahite people in history (the "historical" Israel). Given this distinction, we investigate what we know and what we do not know about the "historical" Israel, and how the biblical writers created the "biblical" Israel.
The classes consist of the instructor's lecture, the students' presentations and discussions by the participants.

ヘブライ語聖書／旧約聖書に関する基礎的な知識を必要とする。
キリスト教の基礎をなす旧約聖書／ヘブライ語聖書の内容や特質をその歴史的背景にもとづいて理解する。
各自が関心をもつ主題について調査し，そこで得た知識から自分自身の見解を構築する論理的思考力を身につける。

旧約聖書／ヘブライ語聖書は古代イスラエルの歴史を扱う書物であるとしばしば言われる。しかし聖書が語る内容は実際の歴史そのものではない。聖書が描くイスラエルの民の物語は，イスラエルおよびユダ両王国の民とその祖先・末裔の経験を素材にしつつ，聖書の著者が創作した構築物として理解すべきである。この授業では，前者の聖書が描くイスラエルを「聖書のイスラエル」，そのモデルとなった後者の歴史上の人々を「歴史のイスラエル」とそれぞれ呼んで区別する。その上で，「歴史のイスラエル」について何が分かり，何が分からないか，そして，聖書の著者がどのような立場や関心から「聖書のイスラエル」を生み出したかを考察する。
授業は科目担当者による解説も交えるが，履修者の発表と参加者全員の討論を中心に進める。
