This course will provide students with the knowledge and perspective to grasp the content and characteristics of the Old Testament in the light of its historical and cultural background.
We will read the introductory part of Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament by John H. Walton. This book convinces bible students to study the literature of the ancient Near East as a means of penetrating the cultural matrix of the ancient people that Israel shared.
The classes consist of the instructor's lecture, students' presentations and discussion by participants. Students are expected to read the textbook, to summarize critically and analytically their assigned sections from it, and to take part in discussions.

旧約聖書／ヘブライ語聖書に関する学部の科目で学ぶ程度の知識を必要とする。
キリスト教の前提となった旧約聖書の内容や特質をその歴史的・文化的背景に照らして理解するための知識と視点を身につける。
This course will provide students with the knowledge and perspective to grasp the content and characteristics of the Old Testament in the light of its historical and cultural background.
John H. Walton, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testamentを講読する。同書は，旧約聖書が古代西アジアの文化的枠組みの中で書かれているため，その外部にいる現代の我々が聖書を理解するためには，本文にいちいち示されない情報や説明を古代西アジアの他の文献に求めて補わなければならないと説く。そして，個々の問題ごとに，古代西アジア（エジプトも含む）の文献が伝える思想と比較することで，旧約聖書の思想を整理しつつ，ほかにない独自性も浮き彫りにしようとするものである。今年度は冒頭の方法論について論じる部分を読む。
授業は，科目担当者（教員）による解説をまじえつつ，履修者の報告・発表と参加者全員の討論により進める。履修者には，テキストから担当箇所を割り振るので，その箇所の内容を報告し，疑問や賛同できない点，また理解を助ける補足情報等を必要に応じて発表することが求められる。
