Students will learn the basic grammar and vocabulary of Classical Ethiopic and conduct research on Classical Ethiopic texts relevant to New Testament research.
Christianity flourished in Ethiopia from a very early period and became its state religion in the early fourth century, prior to Christianity becoming the state religion of the Roman Empire. The unique culture and traditions of Ethiopian Christianity resulted in the preservation of Jewish pseudepigrapha and early Christian texts relevant for study of the New Testament and Early Christianity in Classical Ethiopic (Geez), and Classical Ethiopic continues to be the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church until today. This course will include an introduction to Classical Ethiopic (Geez) language and major texts relevant to the study of New Testament research with a focus on 1 Enoch (esp. The Similitudes), Jubilees, and the Apocalypse of Peter.

古代エチオピア語（ゲエズ語）の基本文法や語彙を学び、新約聖書学研究との関連する古代エチオピア語文献を研究する。
Students will learn the basic grammar and vocabulary of Classical Ethiopic and conduct research on Classical Ethiopic texts relevant to New Testament research.
エチオピアにおいてはキリスト教が早い時期から栄え、キリスト教がローマ帝国の国教となる前にも、エチオピアの国教となっていた。エチオピアのキリスト教の独特な文化や伝統のお蔭で、様々なユダヤ教偽典や初期キリスト教文献が古代エチオピア語（ゲエズ語）翻訳を通して現存し、それらの文献は第二神殿ユダヤ教、新約聖書、古代キリスト教の研究のための豊富な材料となる。現代でも古代エチオピア語はエチオピア正教会の典礼言語である。本科目では、古代エチオピア語（ゲエズ語）の基本文法や語彙が紹介され、Iエノク書（主にエノクのたとえ）、ヨベル書、ペトロの黙示録を中心に、新約聖書学研究と関連する古代エチオピア語文献の研究が行われる。
