【Course Objectives】

The goal is to analyze the relationship between Christianity and politics in contemporary Western societies. The course is linked to the seminar on Contemporary Theology in the spring semester, and we will read and discuss basic papers in this field together throughout the year.

【Course Contents】

After around 2010, right-wing parties with an all-encompassing religious agenda began to take center stage in politics in Western societies. There have always been a certain number of far-right parties, but now more than 15% of voters support them, as in the case of France's Rassemblement National and Germany's AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), not to mention the success of the UK Independence Party led by Nigel Farang in achieving Brexit. In Hungary and Poland, Fidesz and PiS (Law and Justice) became the governing parties; in Italy, Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia became the governing party; and in the Netherlands, Wilders' Partij voor de Vrijheid became the leading party in the general elections.

These parties seem to know how to speak directly to the masses. They have expanded their power by inciting nationalism among the masses, who have grown weary of not being able to enjoy the benefits of globalization. Religion can be found at the heart of this nationalism.

European societies are said to be the most secularized regions in the world, but is there a religious revival taking place in these countries? Are young people once again flocking to churches that are no longer frequented only by tourists? Not at all. Secularization is only increasing. Even in Poland, where nearly 90% of the population used to identify themselves as Catholics, the number of Catholics has declined dramatically in the past decade. In what way, then, does religion inspire politics, especially nationalism?

According to these parties, religion, or Christianity, is the civilizational foundation of their countries. Especially in an era of increasing Muslim immigration and fears of the Islamization of Europe, Christianity as a source of identity is held in high regard. In this seminar, we will focus on Christianity as the defender of Western civilization and the source of identity, and compare it with the conventional understanding of Christianity to clarify the relationship between religion and politics in contemporary Western societies.
