The class will trace the impact of the Cold War on church development, the ecumical movement and contextual theologies in order to sufficiently understand the current situation of Christianity in East Asia.
Based on the assigned literature we will engage in a discussion of the following questions:
What political, ideological and social relationships existed between the global Christian community and dominant Cold War parties? What was the alleged mission of the churches during and in relation to the Cold War? To what extent did churches become instruments of Cold War politics? How did churches negotiate Cold War mentalities? What were the main achievments of the churches and what their main problems during the period from 1945 to 1990?

東アジアにおけるキリスト教の現状を適切に把握するために、冷戦が教会形成、エキュメニカル運動と文脈化神学に与えた影響を追究する。
The class will trace the impact of the Cold War on church development, the ecumical movement and contextual theologies in order to sufficiently understand the current situation of Christianity in East Asia.
指定された文献に基づいて、以下の質問について議論する。世界中のキリスト教共同体と主要な冷戦当事者の間には、どのような政治的、イデオロギー的および社会的な関係が存在したか。冷戦中およびそれに関連する教会の「使命」はどう捉えられたか。教会はどの程度まで冷戦政治の道具となったか。教会はどのように冷戦の心構えを交渉したか。また1945年から1990年までの教会の主な成果と主な課題は何だったのか。
