【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

近代日本のキリスト教思想家の一人である内村鑑三（1861～1930）が「知識人」として日本におけるキリスト教の土着化に向けて果たした役割を検討し、また内村「評伝」によって創出されたきた「物語」を読み解きながら、思想史および文学史関連の研究の着眼点を確認する。

In this seminar we examine the role of Uchimura Kanzō (1861–1930), one of modern Japan’s Christian thinkers, as an “intellectual” in the indigenization of Christianity in Japan. While decoding the “narratives” constructed by “critical biographies” of Uchimura, we seek to identify key perspectives in the fields of intellectual and literary history.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

内村鑑三の生涯・思想に関する基礎知識を身につけながら、近年に刊行された「評伝」と先行研究を比較して、内村をめぐる物語において頻繁に使用されるキーワードとそれらの使用の主旨を確認する。例えば、1)「知識人」によって主導された（とされる）日本におけるキリスト教の土着化、2)「知識人」の内面における「信仰」と「思想」の葛藤・統合、3)「知識人」にとっての「普遍主義」の意義、4)「文学」を創出する「知識人」の「独創性」と「合理性」や、5)「知識人」の自己表現を制約する時代背景などといったプロセスと要素について考えていく。それによって履修者各自が自分自身の研究に適用した視点および方法論についても再考するに至ることを期待する。

After the acquisition of basic knowledge about the life and thought of Uchimura Kanzō, we will compare recent “critical accounts of his life” (hyōden) with other studies to identify frequently used keywords in the narratives surrounding Uchimura as well as the intention behind their application. We will deliberate about processes and elements such as 1) the indigenization of Christianity in Japan (supposedly) led by “intellectuals,” 2) the conflict and integration of “faith” and “thought” in the mentality of “intellectuals,” 3) the significance of “universalism” for “intellectuals,” 4) “originality” and “rationality” in their creation of Christian “literature,” and 5) the historical contexts that constrained their self-expression among others. This process should help students to reconsider the perspectives and methodology they have applied in their own research.
