This course is designed for students who have completed intermediate-level study. Its purpose is to develop students’ ability to listen and make conversation about topics that include specialized content as well as to acquire language appropriate to situations. The goal of the course is that students can develop an accurate and detailed understanding of social issues and current events, by using raw materials, as well as fluently express their own opinions. By the end of the semester, students will have a vocabulary of 10,000-15,000 words.
By gaining an accurate understanding of numerous video teaching materials, students will improve their conversational fluency and accuracy. Students will build their vocabulary and expressions through watching videos on topics including education and aging, while at the same time getting a clear understanding of detailed content in order to learn more about Japanese issues and social concerns. They will then use “proper and correct Japanese” to exchange opinions with others through discussions and presentations, while also developing their ability to speak in front of large groups on current events and social issues.
In conversation class, students will be presented three themes: “exchange”, “speaking with an understanding of different viewpoints”, and “speaking with an understanding of social context”, and practice their verbal fluency.

中級修了レベルの学習者を対象とし,専門的な内容を含む聴解能力と会話能力の育成ならびに場面に適切な日本語の習得を目指す。生の教材を用い,社会問題,時事問題についても細部まで正確に把握し,流暢に意見が言えるようになることを目標とする。学期終了後には,語彙数10,000～15,000語の習得を目指す。

数多くの映像教材を正確に理解することによって,流暢さと的確さを高める。「教育」や「高齢化」等に関するビデオを視聴しながら語彙,表現を増やすと同時に,細部まで内容を把握することにより,日本社会の問題や日本事情について学んでいく。その後,ディスカッションやプレゼンテーションを通じ,「きちんとした日本語」で他者と意見交換したり,時事問題や社会問題について大勢の人の前で発表したりする能力を高めていく。
