Notes

【Course Objectives】

•Acquire a basic, general knowledge of major developments in East Asian film through the 20th century
•Learn about important movements in East Asian cinema, genres, directors, production practices, set design, politics and film, etc.
•Become familiar with the basic tools and language of film analysis

【Course Contents】

Introduction to the history and development of film in East Asia with a focus on the rich film traditions that have developed in Japan, Hong Kong, China PRC, Taiwan, and South Korea. Consideration of Western influences on East Asian cinema alongside an examination of traditional East Asian values and aesthetics. Acquisition of tools of visual literacy in conjunction with inquiry into modern East Asian culture through film. Class sessions will include viewing clips of films, student presentations, lectures and discussions. Conducted in English. Please note that viewing of the weekly film must be completed by the student outside of class time.

Beside the weekly readings, students will need to view and respond to one film outside of class (either the week's featured film or another approved film). Students will need to have access to either Netflix or Hulu or another online film account or will need to rent from a story or view at a library, etc. The instructor will provide feedback to written work.
