Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the most prominent and self-conscious flag-bearers of British modernist writings. By closely reading her novel The Years (1937), we will consider how Woolf represented the passage of time and the changing of times, and their relationship to individual human beings.
In The Years, which chronicles the lives of the members of a genteel family from the 1880s to the contemporary 1930s, Woolf adopts a narrative style that comes nearest among all her fictive works to the straightforward 'realist' narration of earlier periods. Why did she choose to do so after the experimentalism of, for instance, Mrs Dalloway (1923) and To the Lighthouse (1927)? Was it a compromise with general readers who still preferred 'real' novels with easily discernible plotline, or Woolf's wry response to realism fiction? One of the major topics of this class will be the nature of realist and modernist world-representations.
In each class, we will appoint presenters and use their report as the starting point for the discussion. It is expected that not only the presenters, but all participants will proactively speak up in class.

イギリス・モダニズムの最も高名な旗手のひとり、そして最も自意識的なモダニストのひとりであったヴァージニア・ウルフ (1882-1941) のThe Years (1937) を精読することによって、ウルフが時間の流れと時代の変化、そしてそれらと個人の生と関りをどのように表象したかを探ります。
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the most prominent and self-conscious flag-bearers of British modernist writings. By closely reading her novel The Years (1937), we will consider how Woolf represented the passage of time and the changing of times, and their relationship to individual human beings.
1880年代から作品の同時代である1930年代にわたって上層中産家庭の人々の生活を記録するThe Yearsにおいて、ウルフの語りは、前時代のストレートな「リアリズム」の語り口に彼女の作品中で最も接近します。Mrs Dalloway (1923)やTo the Lighthouse (1927)といった作品で大胆な実験を試みたウルフが、なぜこの作品においてはそのような語り口を選んだのでしょうか？ 分かりやすいプロットを持つ「リアル」な小説を求め続ける一般読者への妥協だったのでしょうか、それともこの作品は、リアリズム・フィクションに対するウルフの変化球的レスポンスだったのでしょうか？ この授業の主眼のひとつは、リアリズム／モダニズムの世界表象の性質を考えることにあります。
毎回、発表者を決めて報告してもらい、それを出発点としてディスカッションに入ってゆきます。発表者のみならず、全参加者の積極的な発言を期待します。
