While conducting a thorough close reading of American literary works, students will deepen their understanding of the historical and cultural contexts behind the works. Finally, students will write a final essay publishable in an academic journal.
The history of the United States is, in part, a history of the exclusion of the "Other." Through a reading of Catherine Maria Sedgwick’s Hope Leslie (1827), this seminar examines the presence of Native Americans as this "Other" in the context of a white nation. While other works of Antebellum American literature depicting Native Americans—such as Hobomok and James Fenimore Cooper’s The Leatherstocking Tales—are well known, Hope Leslie is notable for its exceptionally complex and nuanced portrayal of the relationship between white settlers and Native Americans. In this seminar, we will scrutinize not only the political dimensions of the work but also its literary achievements.
As this text invites multifaceted approaches beyond the theme of Otherness, students are encouraged to pursue original readings aligned with their own research interests. Furthermore, we will read representative literary criticism alongside the primary text to discuss practical issues regarding academic writing, such as the definition and ideal structure of a research paper.

英語による学位論文執筆に備えるため、学期を通じて英作文のトレーニングを行う。具体的には、予習範囲を読解の上で（毎回約3時間）、500wordsほどの英語によるレスポンス・ペーパーの執筆（毎回約1時間）を義務づける。提出されたペーパーはその都度添削の上で返却する。また、学期末レポートも英語で書くことを必須とする。

アメリカ文学作品の徹底的な精読を行いつつ、作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的コンテクストの理解を深める。最終的には、代表的な批評も踏まえた上で、学会誌への投稿を前提とした高いレベルの学期末レポートを執筆する。

アメリカ合衆国の歴史は他者の排除の歴史でもある。本演習はCatharine Maria Sedgwick, Hope Leslie (1827)の読解を通じて、白人キリスト教国家にとっての「ネイティヴ・アメリカン」という他者の存在を考察する。ネイティヴ・アメリカンを描いたアンテベラム期アメリカ文学には、Lydia Maria Child, Hobomok (1824)、James Fenimoore Cooperによる革脚絆物語などもよく知られているが、なかでもHope Leslieは白人とネイティヴ・アメリカンの関係をもっとも複雑化かつ繊細に描いた作品といえる。他者という観点から本作を読むことで、アメリカという国家がいかに他者を包摂／排除しながら発展してきたかを検討する。本演習では本作品の政治性のみならず、文学的達成についても吟味検討したい。
この作品は「他者」という主題以外にも、多面的なアプローチが可能なテクストであるので、受講生各自の問題意識に沿って独自の読解を目指してほしい。また、作品だけではなく代表的な批評の読解も行い、論文とは何か、論文とはどうあるべきかなどのプラクティカルな問題についても討議する。
