【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

アメリカ文学作品の徹底的な精読を行いつつ、作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的コンテクストの理解を深める。最終的には、代表的な批評も踏まえた上で、学会誌への投稿を前提とした高いレベルの学期末レポートを執筆する。

While conducting a thorough close reading of American literary works, students will deepen their understanding of the historical and cultural contexts behind the works. Finally, students will write a final essay publishable in an academic journal.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　アメリカ合衆国の歴史は他者の排除の歴史でもある。本演習はHerman Melville, The Confidence-Man (1857)の読解を通じて、白人キリスト教国家アメリカにとってのさまざまな「他者」を検討する。本作品の舞台となる、ミシシッピ河をゆくフィデール号には、黒人、ネイティヴ・アメリカンなど、アメリカ社会のメインストリームから逸脱する他者が多く登場する。しかし、「信用詐欺師」というモチーフに明らかなように、アイデンティティの流動性を描く本作品にあっては、何が「普通」で「異常」か、何が「自己」であり「他者」であるのか、そうした安易な二項対立はすべて無効化されているといってよい。その意味で、本作品はアメリカ社会における「他者」を考えるうえでの根源的な問いを提供してくれる。
　本作品に「他者」が多様な意味を持つ以上、多面的なアプローチが可能なテクストであるので、受講生各自の問題意識に沿って独自の読解を目指してほしい。また、作品だけではなく代表的な批評の読解も行い、論文とは何か、論文とはどうあるべきかなどのプラクティカルな問題についても討議する。

The history of the United States is also a history of the exclusion of the "Other." Through a close reading of Herman Melville's The Confidence-Man (1857), this seminar examines various forms of "alterity" within the context of America as a white Christian nation. The Fidèle, a steamboat navigating the Mississippi River that serves as the novel's setting, features a wide array of "others" who deviate from the mainstream of American society, including Black people, Native Americans. However, in a work that depicts the fluidity of identity through the figure of the con man, it can be said that easy binary oppositions—between "normal" and "abnormal," or "self" and "other"—are entirely invalidated. In this sense, the novel provides fundamental questions for considering the concept of the "Other" in American society.

Since the "Other" takes on diverse meanings in this work, the text allows for multi-faceted approaches; I hope students will strive for their own unique interpretations based on their individual research interests. Furthermore, we will not only analyze the primary text but also read representative critical essays to discuss practical issues, such as what constitutes a scholarly paper and how an academic argument should be structured.

【授業時間外（予習・復習等）の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

英語による学位論文執筆に備えるため、学期を通じて英作文のトレーニングを行う。具体的には、予習範囲を読解の上で（毎回約3時間）、500wordsほどの英語によるレスポンス・ペーパーの執筆（毎回約1時間）を義務づける。提出されたペーパーはその都度添削の上で返却する。また、学期末レポートも英語で書くことを必須とする。
