This course examines an early novel by Edith Wharton in dialogue with its major critical traditions. Recognized as a consummate master of modern American fiction, Wharton develops distinctive modes of apprehending the world. The course situates these modes within the novel's secular imagination and its status as a popular literary genre. In addition, under the instructor's guidance throughout the semester, students will acquire more advanced knowledge and skills to promote their research for doctoral dissertations and publication of research papers.
Edith Wharton is a prominent American novelist whose work bridges the realist tradition associated with Henry James and the emerging modernist sensibility later exemplified by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Through close readings of Wharton's first major novel of manners, The House of Mirth, this course examines the literary, social, and historical factors that established her reputation as a “master of the modern novel.” Particular attention is given to the novel's modernity as expressed through its motifs, narrative style, and historical context. Students are expected to apply the critical and theoretical insights gained in the course to produce a research paper that meets the standards of academic publication.

予習範囲は毎回20-25ページ程度、各自の英語力に合わせた予習時間が毎週3-6時間程度必要になる。図書館のオンラインデータベースにあるOED, KODを活用すること。復習に関しては、授業で説明した先行研究、批評理論用語、文化的産物に関する事実関係を確認し、知識として確実に定着させるべく努めるとともに、翻訳上の課題確認、プロットや人物関係の整理ならびに文学研究にふさわしいテーマの抽出を行うこと。このプロセスに毎週最低2時間はかけることが望まれる。

毎週決められた箇所を予習してくる計画性と積極性。英語の解読ならびに解釈に必要な調査を大学図書館のオンラインデータベース（KOD, OED等）にアクセスして行う勤勉さと熱心さ。
発表のためのハンドアウトを作成し、授業で使うLMSにアクセスするためのコンピュータ。大学図書館におけるオンラインデータベース。
授業の目標およびすべての評価方法において、前期課程よりも高度な達成水準を要求する。
アメリカにおける近代小説の完成者と呼ばれるEdith Whartonの小説を講読し、小説が行なう世界把握の特徴ならびにこのジャンルの世俗性、大衆性について考察する。また、学期を通して担当者の指導のもと、前期課程よりも高度な知識やスキルを身に付けることを目標に置き、各自の博士論文に向けた研究ならびに論文の執筆に役立てる。

Edith Whartonは、Henry Jamesの流れを汲むリアリズム小説と、F. Scott Fitzgeraldが体現するようなモダニズム小説の流れを架橋する作家である。本講では、Wharton最初のメジャー風俗小説であるThe House of Mirthの精読を通し、この作家を「近代小説の完成者」とした要因ならびに、この小説のどこが近代的なのかという問いを、モティーフやスタイル、時代的文脈などから総合的に考察する。受講者は、本講を通して得た知識を援用し、各自、出版を目指した完成度の高い研究論文を作成することが望まれる。
