【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

アメリカの文学を精読することで，その審美的な手触りを確かめるとともに，人種・ジェンダー・セクシュアリティの歴史的・文化的諸相を探り，日英両言語による自己表現能力を養う。

By reading American literary works, we will not only experience the aesthetic feeling they provide but also explore the historical and cultural aspects of race, gender, and sexuality. In doing so, we will cultivate self-expression skills in both Japanese and English.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　Henry David Thoreauの著作は、アメリカン・ルネサンスの時代にとどまらず、20世紀以降の世界にも多大な影響を与えている。このクラスでは、ベトナム戦争の時代に書かれたJerome Lawrence & Robert E. Leeの戯曲、The Night Thoreau Spent in Jailの理解を深めるべく、学期の前半にThoreau自身の政治的な著作（と補助的にEmersonの代表的著作）を読み、後半には、上の戯曲を精読しつつ、その中で呼び覚まされるThoreauの作品と人生を改めて精査する。具体的に参照するテクストは、"Resistance to Civil Government," "Slavery in Massachusetts," "A Plea for Captain John Brown," "Life without Principle," "Self-Reliance" (Emerson)などを予定している。
　なお，授業は，あらかじめ指名された担当者による英語の発表を出発点に，前半は英語，後半は日本語によるディスカッション形式で行うので，受講者の積極的な発言が期待される。

　The works of Henry David Thoreau have exerted a profound influence well beyond the American Renaissance, resonating globally throughout the 20th century and into the present day. In this course, to deepen our understanding of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s play, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail--a work written during the Vietnam War era--we will divide our study into two parts. In the first half of the semester, we will read Thoreau’s own political writings (supplemented by representative works of Ralph Waldo Emerson). In the second half, we will conduct a close reading of the play while re-examining Thoreau’s life and literature as they are invoked within the drama. We plan to reference specific texts such as "Resistance to Civil Government," "Slavery in Massachusetts," "A Plea for Captain John Brown," "Life without Principle," and Emerson's "Self-Reliance."
　Please note that the English presentation by the designated presenter will be followed by a Q&A session in English during the first half and in Japanese during the second half of the class. Therefore, students are expected to actively contribute to class discussions.
