| 備考/ NotesNotes |
This seminar will explore early medieval English literature thematically by focusing on the relationship between literary texts and water, from fresh to salt. Students will deepen their knowledge of medieval texts and cultures through thematic, stylistic, linguistic, literary, and philological analysis. Students will compose several short research essays focusing on the relationship between literary texts and water during the early medieval English period.
We will analyse a representative selection of early medieval English literature. In so doing, we will explore a variety of subjects, including the role of the North Sea in creating and taking away land; responses to the ocean as a whole, from surface to deeps; sacred wells, rivers, and springs; the medieval systematisation of knowledge about water; and hybrid waterbodies. We will focus primarily on Old English and Anglo-Latin texts, with comparison to Old Norse and later Middle English when relevant. Some of the texts we will engage with include: Beowulf, The Battle of Maldon, The Life of St Mildrith, The Life of Saint Guthlac, and the Old English Riddles.
