【Course Objectives】

Students will learn the concept of “ecology” and acquire the ability to apply it to historical analysis, particularly economic history.
Students will develop an understanding of the interrelationships between the natural environment and human livelihoods as well as industrial development.
Through English-language academic literature, students will gain the skills to apply the above concepts to scholarly research.
The goal is to acquire more advanced knowledge and skills than those in the Master’s program.

【Course Contents】

In Japan, the term “ecology” is often commonly understood to mean being “environmentally friendly” or showing “environmental consideration.” However, in its original sense, ecology is a concept that analyzes the interactions between the natural environment and living organisms. In the social sciences, it refers more specifically to a framework for examining the interactions between human economic activities and social institutions on the one hand, and the natural environment on the other.
In this course, from this perspective, we will historically examine the relationship between economic activities and the natural environment in early modern Germany.
Specifically, we will conduct a close reading of Ecology, Economy and State Formation in Early Modern Germany by Paul Warde (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006) and critically examine its arguments.
Students are required to prepare a written summary (handout) of their assigned sections and to participate in discussions based on these presentations.
