The goal of this lecture is to learn how to read and interpret visual images through pictorial works such as emaki, folding screens, and fan paintings. To understand the subject matter and research methods of art history research, and to be able to apply and utilize them in the research that each student is undertaking for their doctoral dissertation.
The lecture will focus on the theme of narrative pictures, taking up picture scrolls, fan paintings, and byobu-e (folding screen paintings), while taking into account the flow of art history, to decipher how the contents of texts such as The Tale of Genji, The Tale of the Heike, and The Tale of Otogi-zoshi (fairy tales) are depicted in paintings. Using images, the lecture will discuss a form of history of the reception of literary works, showing examples of paintings of the same subject matter that have been passed down through generations, as well as examples in which the expression has changed depending on the creator and medium.
In addition, in order to learn how to look at works of literature, we will visit exhibitions and browse rare books such as emaki (picture scrolls), fan paintings, and byobu-e (folding screen paintings) at the university library. Since the content of this course is linked to "Japanese Literature P3B" in the fall semester, it is recommended that students take this course in conjunction with Japanese Literature P3B.

絵巻や屏風、扇面画などの絵画作品を通じて、視覚的イメージの読み解き方を学ぶこと。美術史研究の対象と研究方法を理解し、各自が博士論文のために取り組んでいる研究に応用、活用できるようになること。
The goal of this lecture is to learn how to read and interpret visual images through pictorial works such as emaki, folding screens, and fan paintings. To understand the subject matter and research methods of art history research, and to be able to apply and utilize them in the research that each student is undertaking for their doctoral dissertation.
物語絵をテーマに、美術史の流れをふまえつつ、絵巻や扇面画、屏風絵などを取りあげ、源氏物語や平家物語、御伽草子などのテキスト内容がどのように絵画化されているかを読み解く。講義では画像を用いて、同一主題の図様が描き継がれる事例や、制作者や媒体によって表現が変わる事例などを示しつつ、文学作品の享受史の一形態について講じる。
また、作品の見方を実地で学ぶため、展覧会見学と、大学図書館で、絵巻や扇面画、屏風絵などの貴重書の閲覧を予定している。本科目の内容は、秋学期の「日本文学特殊研究P3B」と連動しているため、あわせて履修することが望ましい。
