Notes

【Course Objectives】

In this seminar, we will examine prose from the collection "Der Trost runder Dinge" (2020) by Austrian author and 2021 Georg Büchner Prize winner Clemens J. Setz. The texts explore the absurd, grotesque, and delusional aspects of everyday life, presenting an exciting challenge for interpretation, particularly in the context of foreign language German studies. Alongside gaining a deeper understanding of the prose, the course aims to develop the ability to conduct independent, methodologically reflective text analysis. This objective will be supported through several learning phases, including regular homework assignments and seminar exercises, and will be assessed through a presentation.

【Course Contents】

A central theme in Clemens J. Setz's body of work, including the collection Der Trost runder Dinge, is the exploration of human perception and its limitations. The characters constantly struggle to recognize and define what is commonly referred to as reality. Similarly, readers are drawn into the interplay between factuality and fictionality, truth and lies, as well as recognition and deception. The interpretative offers within the text often prove inadequate upon closer examination.

Setz's works are characterized by an openness to interpretation that stimulates creativity in analysis but can also lead to frustration when false expectations are placed on the possibilities of text interpretation. Therefore, in the seminar, various methods will be tested to address this challenge.

The prose pieces discussed primarily navigate the tension between science fiction, horror, (psycho-)thriller, and (sur)realistic storytelling, with particular attention given to questions of genre theory and the literary and film-historical context.
