【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

Im vorliegenden Seminar wird der Roman Die Toten (2016) des schweizerischen Autors Christian Kracht behandelt. Der Text verknüpft das Deutschland am Vorabend der nationalsozialistischen Machtergreifung mit dem Japan der 1930er Jahre und thematisiert die Wechselwirkungen von Literatur, Film und Politik. Ziel der Lehrveranstaltung ist es, das Verständnis literarischer Darstellungen historischer und medialer Zusammenhänge zu vertiefen und die Fähigkeit zur eigenständigen Textanalyse weiterzuentwickeln. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei Krachts spezifischer Erzählweise, insbesondere dem Einsatz von Ironie, narrativer Distanz und intertextuellen Bezügen. Dieses Lernziel wird durch die gemeinsame Textarbeit im Seminar, begleitende Aufgaben sowie ein Referat unterstützt und überprüft.

This seminar focuses on the novel Die Toten (2016) by the Swiss author Christian Kracht. The text connects Germany on the eve of the National Socialist seizure of power with Japan in the 1930s and examines the interrelations between literature, film, and politics. The aim of the course is to deepen students’ understanding of literary representations of historical and media-related contexts and to further develop their ability to conduct independent textual analysis. Particular attention is given to Kracht’s distinctive narrative style, especially his use of irony, narrative distance, and intertextual references. These learning objectives are supported and assessed through close reading in the seminar, accompanying assignments, and an oral presentation.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

In dieser Lehrveranstaltung wird der Roman Die Toten (2016) von Christian Kracht gelesen und gemeinsam im Seminar analysiert. Der Text wird im historischen Kontext der 1930er Jahre behandelt, mit besonderem Blick auf das Deutschland am Vorabend der nationalsozialistischen Machtergreifung sowie auf das zeitgenössische Japan.

Ein inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Darstellung des Films als kulturelles und politisches Medium und auf den Wechselwirkungen von Literatur, Film und Politik. Darüber hinaus werden zentrale Motive, Figurenkonstellationen und erzählerische Verfahren des Romans untersucht.

Die Lehrveranstaltung ist als Seminar angelegt und basiert auf gemeinsamer Textlektüre, Diskussionen im Plenum sowie der analytischen Arbeit an ausgewählten Textpassagen. Referate und begleitende Aufgaben dienen dazu, einzelne Aspekte des Romans zu vertiefen und die im Seminar behandelten Inhalte zu festigen.

In this course, the novel Die Toten (2016) by the Swiss author Christian Kracht is read and jointly analyzed in a seminar setting. The text is examined within the historical context of the 1930s, with particular attention to Germany on the eve of the National Socialist seizure of power as well as to contemporary Japan.

A central focus of the course lies on the representation of film as a cultural and political medium and on the interrelations between literature, film, and politics. In addition, key motifs, character constellations, and narrative techniques of the novel are explored.

The course is conducted as a seminar and is based on close reading, plenary discussion, and analytical work on selected passages from the text. Oral presentations and accompanying assignments serve to deepen engagement with specific aspects of the novel and to consolidate the material covered in class.
