-Understanding the Practice of Art Criticism: To gain a comprehensive understanding of art criticism by examining the relationship between visual arts and language, as well as images and texts, through the study of historical discourses.
-Developing Advanced Textual Analysis Skills: To acquire the skills necessary for the accurate and meticulous reading of original foreign-language texts, with an emphasis on both linguistic precision and an appreciation of their historical and cultural contexts.
-Deepening Knowledge of Art History and Institutions: To deepen understanding of art history and the history of artistic institutions, with a particular focus on 18th-century France.
Denis Diderot, the prominent 18th-century French philosopher and key figure of the Enlightenment, was also a prolific writer on art and drama. He produced extensive reviews of the "Salons"—the official exhibitions hosted by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. These writings are widely regarded as the origins of modern art criticism, reflecting a new perspective on art from the burgeoning bourgeoisie. In this course, we will conduct a meticulous reading of selected "Salons" published in the Correspondance littéraire between 1759 and 1781, focusing on those that best illustrate his critical method and theoretical insights.

授業の目標およびすべての評価方法において、前期課程よりも高度な達成水準を要求する。
・芸術を批評するという営みについて、視覚芸術と言語、イメージとテクストとの関係について、歴史的な言説に触れつつ理解する
・外国語の原典を、言語という点からはもちろん、歴史的・文化的な文脈も押さえたうえで、正確に精緻に読む技術を学ぶ
・フランス18世紀を中心とする美術史と美術制度史について理解を深める

フランス18世紀の哲学者ディドロは、啓蒙主義の思想家として知られるが、同時に美術論や演劇論も執筆し、当時の王立絵画彫刻アカデミーによる展覧会「サロン」の批評も手がけた。これらは近代的な芸術批評の始まりであり、市民階級の鑑賞者が芸術に向けた新たな視点を示すものでもある。1759年から81年まで9回に渡り『文芸通信』に掲載された「サロン評」のうち、特徴的なものを精読する。
Denis Diderot, the prominent 18th-century French philosopher and key figure of the Enlightenment, was also a prolific writer on art and drama. He produced extensive reviews of the "Salons"—the official exhibitions hosted by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
