大学院前期課程レベルのミクロ経済学・計量経済学を習得していることが望ましい。
進度に応じてgretl, R, QGIS等をインストールする（授業中に指示）。
・経済学の理論的枠組みに沿って、都市と地域に関する諸問題を分析できるようになる。
・計量経済学の手法を用いた実証分析や政策評価の方法を理解し、研究能力を身につける。
・大学教員や実務家となることを念頭に、実証分析・政策評価手法について的確に説明できるようになる。また受講者間の議論を主導することができるようになる。なお、前期課程よりも高度な知識・スキルを身に付けることを目標にする。
都市・地域の実証経済分析をカバーしたテキストを演習形式で学ぶ。導入として空間固有の指標である不平等指標および経済集積指標に触れるとともに、因果推論や自然実験の手法について確認する。前半では都市経済学のうち、集積の経済の実証分析を扱う。後半では経済地理学の実証分析を扱い、自国市場効果、空間的賃金構造、交易費用といったトピックの実証分析を理解する。
また分析手法にとどまらず実際の分析事例を取り上げて検討し、受講者自身の研究ができるように統計ソフトやGISの活用についての演習を行う。
授業においては、受講者によるプレゼンテーションおよび、活発な議論を重視する。使用するテキストや授業の内容は、受講者の理解度や関心領域によって変更することがある。
