This seminar aims to provide students with foundational knowledge for thinking about and discussing how inequality arises based on class, gender, race/ethnicity, and nationality through the Japanese and English literature on the study of social stratification. Students will be required to review the assigned literature and make a presentation with comments. Following the report by the student in charge, all students will engage in a discussion.
In the first session of the class, students will be assigned a literature review. The student in charge of the assigned session will review a specified range of texts or a selected Japanese/English article on social stratification and report it in class. Through these reports, students are expected to acquire knowledge of the basic concepts and theoretical frameworks of social stratification and inequality research.

授業で扱う論文では高度な統計的手法が用いられている可能性があるが、そうした分析手法に関する予備的知識は要しない。
初回に授業の方針を説明し、割り当ても行うので、履修希望者は必ず出席すること。
この授業の目的は、社会階層研究の日本語・英語の文献を通して、出身階層やジェンダー、人種、国籍などによる格差がどのように生じているのかについて考えるための土台となる知識を身につけ、議論できるようになることにある。学生は割り当てられた文献のレビューを行い、コメントをつけてプレゼンを行うこと、またそのプレゼンに対しディスカッションを行うことが求められる。
前期課程よりも高度な知識・スキルを身に付けることを目標とする。

授業では初回に担当を割り振り、担当回の学生は、予め社会階層に関するテキストの指定範囲、もしくは指定した日本語・英語論文のレビューを行い、授業で報告する。この報告を通し、社会階層と不平等研究の基本的な概念や理論的な枠組みの知識を身につけることが期待される。
