This course will provide students with insight into the thought of the Old Testament in the light of its cultural and historical background.
Students will become aware the problems that previous studies in the field have faced and will strive to resolve them.
We will read mainly the chapter on theology (concepts about gods) from John H. Walton's Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament. This book convinces bible students to study the literature of the ancient Near East as a means of penetrating the cultural matrix shared by ancient Israel with her neighbors.
The classes consist of the instructor's lecture, students' presentations and discussion by participants. Students are expected to read the textbook, to summarize critically and analytically their assigned sections from it, and to take part in discussions.

旧約聖書／ヘブライ語聖書に関する学部の科目で学ぶ程度の知識を必要とする。
授業の目標およびすべての評価方法において、前期課程よりも高度な達成水準を要求する。
キリスト教の前提となった旧約聖書の思想をその文化的・歴史的背景に照らして理解するための知識や視点を身につける。
当該分野における従来の研究が抱える問題点を認識し，その解消に向けて努力する姿勢を身につける。

John H. Walton, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testamentを講読する。同書は，旧約聖書が古代西アジア（エジプトも含む）の文化的枠組みの中で書かれているため，その外部にいる現代の我々が聖書を理解するためには，本文にいちいち示されない情報や説明を古代西アジアの他の文献に求めて補わなければならないと説く。そして，個々の問題ごとに，古代西アジアの文献が伝える思想と比較することで，旧約聖書の思想を整理しつつ，その独自性も浮き彫りにしようとするものである。今年度は神観について論じる部分を中心に読む。
授業は，科目担当者（教員）による解説をまじえつつ，履修者の報告・発表と参加者全員の討論により進める。履修者には，テキストから担当箇所を割り振るので，その箇所の内容を報告し，疑問や賛同できない点，また理解を助ける補足情報等を必要に応じて発表することが求められる。
