Medieval Western books were all manuscripts, transcribed by human hands. Among, the works that people most eagerly transcribed were various Christian manuscripts. These manuscripts were lavishly decorated to glorify the words of God. In this seminar, we will study the art of decoration in such manuscripts, by period, tracing its development over time.
The art of illuminated manuscripts could be seen is the ensemble of decoration through scripts, illustrations, and decorative patterns. In this seminar, we will observe, compare, and analyze the ensembles of decoration from different periods, focusing on examples preserved in facsimile (fine replicas) in our university library.

授業の目標およびすべての評価方法において、前期課程よりも高度な達成水準を要求する。
西欧中世の書物は、すべて人の手（manus）によって書き写された(script)写本(manuscript)であった。なかでも人々が最も熱心に書き写したものが、各種のキリスト教写本である。それらのキリスト教写本には、神の言葉を輝かせるべく、豪華な装飾がほどこされた。本講義ではこの中世写本の装飾芸術を時代を追って学んでいく。

中世写本画の芸術は、文字と挿絵と文様による、装飾のアンサンブルに見ることができる。本講義では、本学図書館にファクシミリ（精巧な模本）が所蔵されている作例を中心に、各時代の装飾のアンサンブルを観察、比較、考察していく。
