What theoretical, methodological and analytical perspectives can Religious Studies and Christian Studies share with regard to academic approaches to "religion(s)", or what differences can be discerned between them, and what consequences do these differences have for the results of the respective research? We will look for both problems and potentials of Christian Studies, while at the same time engaging with recent methodological and theoretical debates in Religious Studies that are located in the humanities, which are increasingly tending towards interdisciplinarity and even transdisciplinarity. In this way, we will understand the importance of academic self-reflection in the actual practice of the participants' concrete research.
Religious Studies is a relatively young discipline that emerged in the course of the second half of the nineteenth century with the aim of analyzing religious phenomena and systems in an allegedly "academic" (i.e. "non-theological" or "non-denominational") way, which means that, in the Western context, a problem had to arise between "Theology" and "Religious Studies" with regard to the objects of study, since theology had seen itself as the only discipline qualified to deal with "religion". We will evaluate the methodologies and theories that "Religious Studies" has developed (especially since the last quarter of the 20th century) and highlight their possible contributions to contemporary "Christian Studies", as well as the scholarly problems that concern both "Religious Studies" and "Christian Studies". In this course we will read literature (mainly in English) and hold presentations and debates on it.

「宗教」という現象への「宗教学的」アプローチと「キリスト教学的」アプローチは、どのような理論的・方法論的・分析的視座を共有しているのだろうか。あるいは両者の間にはいかなる差異が存在し、それが分析の結果にいかに影響を及ぼしているのだろうか。昨今、学際的、さらにはトランス・ディシプリナリな志向が顕著となりつつある人文系諸学の中にあって宗教研究が展開してきた方法論的・理論的議論を介して、キリスト教研究が抱える問題点ならびに可能性を照射し、各自の具体的な研究活動における学問論的反省の重要性を認識する。

宗教研究は19世紀中葉以降、宗教現象や宗教システムを「学問的」（「非神学的」、「非宗派的」）に論じることを目的として掲げた比較的若い学問分野である。これは西洋の文脈において、「宗教」を論じる学問としての自己理解を確立していた「神学」との間に対象領域画定を巡る問題が生起せざるを得なかったということを意味している。こうした緊張関係の中に当初から位置し続けた宗教研究が、その後展開してきた（特に20世紀最後の四半世紀以降の）方法論・理論を考察することによって、それらが現在のキリスト教研究に対して果たしうる貢献の可能性と、宗教研究・キリスト教研究の両者が抱える学問論的問題を明らかにする。本授業では、文献（主に英語文献）の講読とそれに基づく発表・議論を行う。
